Doctor warns of melatonin trend on TikTok

Melatonin seems to be a popular topic on TikTok. This hashtag alone has more than 1 billion views on the app, while other phrases like “Melatonin Challenge” have attracted more than 150,000 curious eyes.

Many users have documented their experiences with melatonin gummies, with some taking things too far – such as one user claiming they would take 10 10 mg gummies and see what is going to happen.

Dr. Karan, a physician and general surgeon popular on social media, spoke out about melatonin abuse in a YouTube Shorts clip and why melatonin may not be a sleep aid. Sleep cures all diseases as people think.

“This may be the most important thing you need to hear about melatonin,” he begins.

“The more alert and active you are, the more a chemical called adenosine builds up in your body, making you feel tired. This is often called sleep pressure, or [sleep] drive. When you sleep, adenosine levels drop, making you feel alert and alert the next day.”

“Melatonin supplements have the ability to artificially reset adenosine levels in your body, thereby exacerbating the problem of insomnia. This is because external melatonin can disrupt the delicate balance between adenosine and melatonin needed to regulate sleep.”

So what is Dr. Karan’s advice for getting a good night’s sleep? “Keep your room cool, avoid darkness in the evening, and create a sleep schedule.”

While Dr. Karan claims melatonin supplements can help regulate a person’s sleep schedule, it can also do more harm than good — and because melatonin supplements are not regulated in many countries so you “may not get what you pay for”. because.”

This is just the latest TikTok trend to attract attention from the medical community after medical experts warned against using beef tallow as part of one’s skin care regimen.
