Sophie Toscan du Plantier was a French television producer killed outside her farm near Toormore, Goleen, County Cork, Ireland on the night of 23 December 1996. She was the mother of a child. Toscan du Plantier was 39 years old at the time of her death. British journalist Ian Bailey was jailed twice by the Garda Síochána, however the Director of Public Prosecutions brought no charges. There is not enough evidence to proceed to trial. Ian Bailey lost a libel case against six newspapers in 2003. Ian also lost the arrest of the Gardaí, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General in 2015.

In 2019, Bailey was convicted of murder by the Paris Court and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was tried in absentia in France after winning his legal battle against extradition. In 2020, the Irish Supreme Court ruled that Bailey could not be arrested.
