An Instagram model is being criticized after posting several photos of herself swimming in a dangerous and banned cave in the Canary Islands.
Marina Rivera Saldaña is a famous Spanish Instagram model and influencer, boasting nearly two million followers on Insta and over 7 million fans on TikTok.
While Saldaña regularly posts photos of herself in stunning locations, some of her most recent photos are taking social media by storm.
On September 1, the model took a few photos of herself in a cave with beautiful blue water in the background. In some of these photos, she can be seen swimming underwater with the caption: “I am the little mermaid from Makoo.”
Although the setting was nothing short of idyllic, many comments pointed out that Saldaña was actually swimming in an extremely dangerous area.
More specifically, Marina is taking a dip in the famous El Tancón cave located in Santiago del Teide, Tenerife in the Canary Islands – a group of Spanish islands near Morocco.
According to the New York Post, the cave is beautiful but deadly, with six people believed to have lost their lives at the site as of 2021.
In fact, this cave is so dangerous that it is actually banned to tourists due to a bufadero, also known as a ‘blast hole’. This rock formation can cause “unpredictable” currents and make it difficult for emergency responders to reach those inside.

Commentators had a lot to say about Saldaña’s latest photo shoot, with many viewers berating her for visiting a dead zone and being off-limits just to take a few pictures.
“Bathing is forbidden there,” wrote one user. “We’re fed up with tourists who don’t respect our land.”
“To me, it seems disrespectful that you shower in a FORBIDDEN place, with BARRIERS and SIGNS prohibiting showering, and you enter because of the photos, and on top of that you publish it. Where you live, people have died, it’s not a suitable area for bathing,” another person said.
“I don’t understand why they would ignore all the security measures for one photo, unfortunately,” another commented.
This isn’t the first time an influencer has been criticized for their travels; Recently, a TikToker faced backlash for urging her viewers to simply “book a weird flight” to Thailand instead of staying at home.
