Booster was born in South Korea, adopted by an American couple, and placed in a conservative, white, Protestant family when he was just an infant. He was homeschooled by his family and grew up in Plainfield, Illinois.

At age 16, he entered public school for the first time, marking his experience with the words “first time around non-religious people.”

He knew he was gay since he was a child but decided to keep it a secret for fear of the consequences he would face because he belonged to a conservative society. His fears soon came true. When Booster reached senior high school, his parents discovered he was gay by reading about his sexual encounters with other boys recorded in his diary. He then moved out and started surfing until one of his close friends asked him to stay with him.

For his bachelor’s degree, he went to Millikin University to study theater.

Booster began his career as a copywriter, performing in theater and later writing jokes after work. Around that time he was living in Chicago. As for his Stand-up career, he started by opening plays in Chicago Broadway. He then moved to New York in 2014 to pursue a career in comedy. In 2016, he made the movie Conan. Then in 2017, he started his own Comedy Central Stand-up Presents special. Booster also shows an interest in writing and has written for many shows. Some of them are Billy on the Street, Big Mouth and the other two.

His debut Stand-up album was released on November 3, 2018, titled Model Minority. Kim played Susan Sarandon in Viper Club, a YouTube original series, Netflix’s The Week of, on Hulu’s Shrill. In 2019, he was seen as a co-host in a digital series called Unsend, alongside Patti Harrison on Comedy Central. His famous films include Fire, The Other Two, Island and Trip.

He is also a regular panelist on the NPR show ‘Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me!’. He appeared on one of the episodes of The George Lucas Talk Show that aired on December 8, 2020. Kim also co-hosts the podcast Urgent Care.

Kim was named a Comic to Watch by Variety magazine and named a 30 Under 30 in Hollywood and Entertainment by Forbes. He was also included in Vulture’s list of 20 comedians you should know and will know.

Kim Booster spoke quite often about his sexuality in Stand-up. He quotes ‘I knew I was gay before I knew I was Asian’. Kim announced that he has bipolar disorder on July 21, 2020. He is a strong activist for LGBTQ rights. He may be dating a man but has kept his relationship out of the public eye. During one of his Stand-Ups, he shared the story of his first breakup and how he handled it.
