The number of searches for “offside” and “soccer rules” skyrocketed after yesterday’s Sidemen charity soccer match, when Kai Cenat’s goal was invalidated after he was found to be offside.
The Sidemen charity football match saw influencers from around the world come together to raise money for charity with a football match streamed online to more than two million people.
While Sidemen FC, led by KSI, won the final, an early move from Kai Cenat looks like it could be a goal.
However, due to the complicated offside rule, the final goal was denied. To many viewers, this didn’t seem to mean much, as search trends showing “offside rule” and “soccer rules” skyrocketed after this point.
Kai Cenat’s offside error prompted a major search for “soccer rules” in the US
According to Google Trends, searches for “soccer rules” and “offside” increased dramatically around the time of the Sidemen charity soccer match yesterday (September 9).
The biggest spike occurred in the US, where searches increased nearly 200%. This makes sense, since Americans call it soccer rather than soccer, and the offside rule is less well understood.
Despite this, there has been a huge increase in England in the “offside rule”, suggesting that even at home the English are not up to speed with the workings of football’s more complex rules.
Other highlights of the game included a testy exchange between IShowSpeed and KSI, in which the British YouTuber taunted the younger streamer before easily defending his penalty.
The final score was 8-5 in favor of Sidemen FC. Many viewers blamed All Star for the loss xQc goalkeeper, who finished with a score of 0.3, Lowest in the game.
