Zhang Weili was born on August 13, 1989 in Handan, Hebei, China. Her father was a miner and her mother was a housewife. It is known that she has an older brother who used to be a gold trader but then quit to support Zhang’s career. He currently works at the gym where she works out. As early as 6 years old, she started practicing Shaolin Kung Fu from a local martial artist. Her inspiration was from watching Kung Fu movies. When she was in elementary school, she used to practice many different sports such as track and field, football and table tennis. After the age of 12, she was sent to a specialized martial arts school in Handan. She started practicing Sanda and Shuai Jiao, a Chinese style of wrestling. Zhang Weili has won the Sanda Championship of Hebei many times. Thanks to that, she was selected to the Sanda team in Jiangsu province. Unfortunately, due to a back injury, she had to quit the sport. After moving to Beijing at the age of 17, she worked various jobs as a supermarket cashier, kindergarten teacher, security guard and hotel receptionist. At the end of 2010, she ran into a local gym in Beijing and was appointed as a fitness trainer. She has the privilege of using the gym equipment for free after the gym closes for the evening. While watching the other members struggle there, she started practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). She then moved on to work as a receptionist. During her work, she learned that one of the fighters who had tried out at the gym was her idol, Wu Haotian, the pioneer of Chinees MMA. In 2012, she became acquainted with Haotian, who brought her into the Black Tiger Fighting Club. From there, coach Cai Xuejun noticed her talent and started training her in MMA.

In 2013, Zhang Weili made his professional MMA debut. Thanks to a unanimous decision, she won 11 matches in a row. At Kunlun Fight MMA 11 on May 25, 2017, she challenged Simon Duarte for the Kunlun Fight women’s strawweight title, winning the second round via TKO. On June 1, 2017, in her first title defense against Aline Sattelmayer, at Kunlun Fight MMA 12, she won the bout. Her promotional debut was made against Danielle Taylor on August 4, 2018, which she won. She fought Jessica Andrade on August 31, 2019 for the UFC women’s strawweight title. With a technical knockout in the first round, Zhang Weili won the match to become the new Strawweight champion. She was also awarded Performance of the Night for this win. After facing some restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was finally granted a visa to come to the United States to compete at UFC 248. Winning the back-and-forth bout, she secured a defense. First UFC Strawweight title. The battle also brought her Battle of the Night reward.
